OpenAI Videos API (Sora 2) sunset checklist

OpenAI Videos API (Sora 2) is scheduled to shut down on September 24, 2026, with OpenAI's current video generation models and endpoints as the path forward. Here's what's happening and a step-by-step checklist to migrate before it breaks.

What's happening

OpenAI's deprecations page lists the Videos API and the sora-2 and sora-2-pro models as being removed on September 24, 2026. After that date requests to those model aliases and the associated video endpoints stop working.

Every date on this page is taken from the vendor's own documentation, linked under “Sources” below. Dates can change — always confirm against the source before you plan.

Migration checklist

  1. Search your codebase for the model ids sora-2 and sora-2-pro and for calls to OpenAI's video generation endpoints.
  2. Check OpenAI's deprecations page for the named replacement model(s) and endpoint shape — aliases are being retired, so pin to a current, supported model id.
  3. Regenerate or re-test any cached prompts / parameters against the replacement model; output characteristics and options can differ between video model generations.
  4. Update any stored references to the old model ids in config, prompt templates and docs.
  5. Verify billing and rate limits on the new model, then move production traffic across before September 24, 2026.

Who's affected

Products that generate video through OpenAI's Videos API using the sora-2 or sora-2-pro model aliases.
