Google Content API for Shopping sunset checklist

Google Content API for Shopping is scheduled to shut down on August 18, 2026, with the Merchant API (the official successor) as the path forward. Here's what's happening and a step-by-step checklist to migrate before it breaks.

What's happening

Google's release notes state the Content API for Shopping will be sunset on August 18, 2026, with the Merchant API as its successor. Merchant API v1beta users face an earlier cut-off of February 28, 2026. After sunset, programmatic product, inventory and account calls on the old Content API stop working.

Migration checklist

  1. Find every integration that posts to the Content API for Shopping (shoppingcontent.googleapis.com) — product feeds, inventory updates, account and datafeed management, order handling.
  2. Register a Google Cloud project if you don't have one; the Merchant API requires GCP registration, unlike the older Content API.
  3. Map resources to the Merchant API's sub-APIs (Products, Inventories, Accounts, Reports, Data sources) — it is a redesign, not a renamed endpoint, so field names and structures change.
  4. If you use the Merchant API v1beta today, complete your move to the stable version before February 28, 2026 — that beta cut-off is earlier than the main sunset.
  5. Test feeds end to end in a non-production Merchant Center context, confirm products still get approved, then switch production traffic before August 18, 2026.
  6. If you only upload products manually or via Google Sheets, no code migration is needed — this deadline is for programmatic integrations.

Who's affected

Merchants and platforms that send product data to Google Merchant Center programmatically via the Content API for Shopping — feed tools, e-commerce platforms and custom integrations.
